Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Avi is an award-winning author who has written many books for young readers. In City of Orphans he tells about the life of poor immigrant children in 1893 New York. His book comes alive with believable characters as Bruno of the Pug Ugly gang is threatening the newsies — the young boys who hawk newspapers on the Lower East Side. It is a dangerous life. Here’s my teaser:
That’s the moment when Maks does what he’s never done before in his whole life: He cries, “Help!” And that’s when the body on the ground jumps up. Rises so fast and unexpected, all Maks can see is that whoever it is has this big stick and is swinging it like a whirligig gone wild, smacking Bruno on his shoulder, arm, face — thwack-thwack-thwack! (p.14)
Would your kids keep reading? Tell me about your current read. Go on, tease me!
You captured my interest when you replied to my comment over at Yvonne’s and mentioned the author Avi. I’ve had a book by this author sitting on my shelf for ages – an impulse buy off the bargain shelf in a bookstore. “The Book without Words” sounded fascinating at the time (and still does). I think you might have inspired me to move it near the top of my pile!

I haven’t read that one but it does sound fascinating. One of the things I really like about Avi is that all his books are different — they don’t seem to follow a formula, or continue the same characters, or even keep a continuity of time and place — they’re all different. And because they’re for kids, they’re generally a fast read. I stayed up way too late last night because I couldn’t put the book down. Will likely finish it this afternoon. I hope you enjoy yours. I think I’ll try to find a copy of it as well — it really does sound intriguing.

I’ve always wanted to read something by Avi, but this might not be the one I’d start with. Excellent teaser, though!

It really is a good story. Maks is a really caring boy who faces a lot of problems with courage and a strong belief in helping others. Avi is a really great author. Thanks for coming by.

This sounds like an interesting read. My daughter is still too young for it, but I imagine it will definitely appeal to an older audience.

Glad you liked it. It’s funny. I had a different, very calm teaser picked out that I found interesting but then I thought it wasn’t exciting enough to engage a kid, so I switched. The book is proving very interesting. Makes me wish I had seen the musical “Newsies”. Thanks for stopping by.

But then he wouldn’t have met Willa. It’s the beginning of a great relationship. I found your teaser rather scary. Are you enjoying the book? Thanks for stopping by.
