Teaser Tuesday: Mary the Magdalene by Margaret George

TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3-300x203Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I’m still reading and enjoying Mary Called Magdalene by Margaret George.  This book is rich with the culture of the time, and the interactions and observations of Jesus’ activities are straight from the Bible gospels but with a bit of commentary from Mary.  It is fascinating history combined with conjecture.  My teaser for today is from p.180:

She had come to the end of her life. The little girl who had picked up the idol out of curiosity was now a demon-ridden woman who had been cast out of her home, tormented and driven to this place of no hope at all.

I will die here, she thought, far away from my home, and my daughter will never even remember me.

I hope you’re as intrigued as I am with a character who is as controversial today as in her own time, a widow, called by Jesus, travelling around the towns and countryside with a group consisting of mostly men, treated as an outcast by her family.  I’m almost to their entry into Jerusalem and read as much as I can each day.

What’s your current read?  Share your teaser!

  1. Definitely intrigued. I fell in love with Mary Magdalene’s character when I saw a documentary where she has a bit of competition with Peter on some Church matters. Haven’t read any book about her though, I’d love to check this one out. Thanks for stopping by my TT post.

I’m about 4/5 through now and finding some tension between her and Peter here as well. I’ll look for the documentary. I’m finding now I want to know a lot more. Thanks for coming by.

  3. Oh, yes! I am definitely intrigued. I think it was the opera Jesus Christ Superstar that made me look more closely at her and want to know more about the woman. (Not that the opera is based in fact–but she does have her own solo that’s quite lovely.) Sometimes fiction has a way of making me want to know more about a historical figure.

I never saw that. I should see if I can get it online. The book is certainly creating a fascinating and plausible woman from what little information there is about her. Thanks for stopping by.

I’m glad to hear you’re still enjoying this one. I’m not familiar with Margaret George but having just checked out her website, see that she’s a very sprightly 73 year old. An inspiration! Thanks for visiting my TT at http://indie-bookworm.blogspot.co.uk/
