First Chapter, First Paragraph; Teaser Tuesday: Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult

fistchapFirst chapter, first paragraph, is a meme hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea.

This is the first book I’ve read by Jodi Picoult and it grabbed me right from the start.  Here’s the beginning of the Prologue to Vanishing Acts:

VanishingActsI was six years old the first time I disappeared.

My father was working on a magic act for the annual Christmas show at the senior center, and his assistant, the receptionist who had a real gold tooth and false eyelashes as thick as spiders, got the flu. I was fully prepared to beg my father to be part of the act, but he asked, as if I were the one who would be doing him a favor.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat. TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3-300x203Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Here’s a teaser from Picoult’s Vanishing Acts:

Let me tell you what happens when you cook down the syrup of loss over the open fire of sorrow:  It solidifies into something else. Not grief, like you’d expect, or even regret. No, it gets thick as paste, black as ash; yet it isn’t until you dip a finger in and feel that sharp taste dissolving on your tongue that you realize this is anger in its purest form, unrefined; a substance to be weighed and measured and spread. p.88

Which ones have you read by her that you liked? This is my first one by her and I’m finding the writing very rich and I like her characters. I’d like to read more by her.

I’ve also not read one of her books in a while. The writing is strong and I just might try this one.

  3. I read a few Jodi Picoult books a while ago and enjoyed them but started to feel they were getting a little samey. It’s maybe time I tried one again as they are good.

  5. I do like Jodi Picoult’s books although I haven’t read one for quite some time – my favourite of all is Plain Truth which is also the first one I read – glad you are enjoying Vanishing Acts.

I’m not too far into Leaving Time yet so I can’t properly recommend it, but I’ve read her other novel The Storyteller last year and that one is without doubt an interesting read. Especially the part that is set during WWII is really well written…

  10. I don’t think I have read any of Jodi’s books, but I have seen this one around before and it sounds like something I would enjoy. I love magic and the paranormal.

Something I found really interesting in it was that her dog was a search and rescue dog and the parts of the story line where she used her to track were cool. I wouldn’t say there’s any actual paranormal in the story — maybe a bit in the native culture parts. Thanks for coming by.
