This week’s Monday Mystery is by a new author. Once a Crooked Man is an excellent first novel from actor David McCallum star of Man from U.N.C.L.E., NCIS, and outstanding movies such as The Great Escape. Once a Crooked Man will keep you guessing right to the end because the ending is one you will never guess.
When out-of-work actor Harry Murphy accidentally overhears 3 crime bosses plotting to kill one of their British operatives, he naïvely hops a flight to London with a vague hope of warning the intended victim. The Bruschetti brothers have a run a successful crime syndicate for decades, but now they want to tie off loose ends and enjoy a luxurious retirement they feel they so richly deserve. When Murphy throws a wrench into their tie-off plans, they quickly have to improvise a Plan B. From there, the plot takes many twists involving money laundering, credit card scams, sting operations, an international IT cop squad, and poor Harry in the middle of it all. Or so he thinks. Some of the turns of events are hilarious while others are taut with tension. Even Harry is surprised by the way things turn out! * * * *
