Chapter One
I did not want to attend the burning. I have never liked even such things as the bearbaiting, and this was to be the burning alive at the stake of four living people, one a woman, for denying that the body and blood of Christ were present in the Host at Mass. Such was the pitch we had come to in England during the great heresy hunt of 1546.

Would you keep reading? I’m quite excited about the prospect of getting to this book soon. Like many others, I have a fascination for anything about British kings and queens ever since studying Shakespeare’s plays of the Henrys and the Richards, Hamlet, Macbeth (obviously not British monarchs, those last two), and King John way back in high school. In later years, many TV programmes and book series have added to the immense attraction and I’ve heard wonderful things about Sansom’s series. Well I can honestly say that I just added another book to Mount TBR. I was certainly inspired to read this one. Or should I say several more books since this is book 6 in the series?

Glad you were intrigued. I’m not sure if I’m starting at the beginning of the series — I’ve bought several of them but am familiar enough, I think, with Tudor history to be able to start anywhere. I like the word Lamentation, so am leaning toward starting there. Thanks for stopping by.

I’m not sure how much of it there is but this was the time of the Spanish Inquisition and England certainly had its share of church conflict and burnings. (Also, drawing and quartering for treason.) Thanks for coming by.

I haven’t read any books by this author, but this sounds like one I’d enjoy. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres.

He has a whole series — all of the books, I think, with the same main character high enough to know what’s going on but not so high as to have a skewed picture of things. All of them are large books so it may take me awhile to get through them all. Thanks for stopping by.

I don’t think I could stomach seeing someone burn alive. Terrible, terrible. I’ve been wanting to try this author for some time now. I would definitely give this book a try. Thank you for sharing!

Me neither. I wouldn’t want to see anyone put to death in any manner although I guess TV has anesthetized us to violence somewhat. I’m looking forward to getting into it. I hope it lives up to its hype. Merry Christmas.
