First Chapter, First Paragraph, is a meme hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea. Anyone can play — just copy the first paragraph of the first chapter (or prologue) and include a picture of the book cover. Leave your link at Bibliophile by the Sea. Here’s the opening from Lamentation by C.J. Sansom:
Chapter One
I did not want to attend the burning. I have never liked even such things as the bearbaiting, and this was to be the burning alive at the stake of four living people, one a woman, for denying that the body and blood of Christ were present in the Host at Mass. Such was the pitch we had come to in England during the great heresy hunt of 1546.
Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, now being hosted by Ambrosia of The Purple Booker.
Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers! So, from the same novel:
Barak grunted, then looked at me seriously. ‘What was it like? The burning?’
‘Horrible beyond description. But everyone played their part,’ I added bitterly. ‘The crowd, the city officials and Privy Councillors sitting on their stage.’ p.20
Would you keep reading? I’m quite excited about the prospect of getting to this book soon. Like many others, I have a fascination for anything about British kings and queens ever since studying Shakespeare’s plays of the Henrys and the Richards, Hamlet, Macbeth (obviously not British monarchs, those last two), and King John way back in high school. In later years, many TV programmes and book series have added to the immense attraction and I’ve heard wonderful things about Sansom’s series. Have you read any of his books in this series or his other works? Leave a comment and a link to your First Chapter, First Paragraph and Teaser Tuesday page.
I’ve seen this but had no idea what it was about so thanks for sharing. I do like that teaser and I’m feeling tempted 🙂

I don’t know about you, but I’m terrible at resisting temptation when it comes to books. Thanks for coming by. Merry Christmas.

It looks interesting, and even a bit puzzling. Thanks for sharing, on my TBR now!

I haven’t read this author, but by way of an avid friend I have acquired interesting tidbits of British monarchs and their courts.

Well I can honestly say that I just added another book to Mount TBR. I was certainly inspired to read this one. Or should I say several more books since this is book 6 in the series?

Glad you were intrigued. I’m not sure if I’m starting at the beginning of the series — I’ve bought several of them but am familiar enough, I think, with Tudor history to be able to start anywhere. I like the word Lamentation, so am leaning toward starting there. Thanks for stopping by.

It caught my interest but it’s not my usual genre, so I’m not sure how far I would read.

I’m kind of into anything Tudor so it really appeals to me although I’ve not read Sansom before. It’s had good reviews, though. Thanks for stopping by.

I’m not a big fan of witch burning, so I probably wont hunt this one down.

I’m not sure how much of it there is but this was the time of the Spanish Inquisition and England certainly had its share of church conflict and burnings. (Also, drawing and quartering for treason.) Thanks for coming by.

I haven’t read any books by this author, but this sounds like one I’d enjoy. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres.
My Tuesday post features a middle grade novel: TOO BIG.

He has a whole series — all of the books, I think, with the same main character high enough to know what’s going on but not so high as to have a skewed picture of things. All of them are large books so it may take me awhile to get through them all. Thanks for stopping by.

Reading it might be something I could do…I could not see this in a movie! Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

I don’t think I could stomach seeing someone burn alive. Terrible, terrible. I’ve been wanting to try this author for some time now. I would definitely give this book a try. Thank you for sharing!

Me neither. I wouldn’t want to see anyone put to death in any manner although I guess TV has anesthetized us to violence somewhat. I’m looking forward to getting into it. I hope it lives up to its hype. Merry Christmas.

This is a book that has been on my TBR for ages – from the opening it is clear it is a book to get lost in

Yes. I haven’t read much more than the opening and I feel exactly the same way. I have two other books to read before I can get into it and I’m chafing at the bit. Thanks for coming by.
