Part One: The Injustice
Chapter 1
The girls came early to the stoning. They emerged one by one from the gates of Emanuel, which the sentries opened at sunrise, and spread out over the barren slopes to collect rocks. There were more than seventy girls, all of the town’s unmarried maidens, ten years and older. With their brown wool dresses and bent backs, they looked like an army of weary squirrels gathering nuts for the winter.

Oh no, I can see what is coming next and I don’t like it. I’m assuming this is Deborah from the Bible? I’m curious to see how it is handled.

I read another novel about Deborah that was more focused on the adult Deborah and while there were battles and betrayals there wasn’t the cruelty and lack of justice I found in this novel which starts when Deborah is 12 or 13 years old. I liked it better than this one but it turns out it’s part 1 of a trilogy so I’m going to have to get the next two. Part 2 comes out in March. Thanks for coming by and commenting.

This sounds similar to a movie I watched. It was hard to stomach but ended up captivating me.

Although not a religious person myself, I have read several books with religion being the epicentre of the stories, whether they be from devil worship to Biblical eras.
I don’t know if I would carry on with this one. It’s an interesting start, and I like the way it could go from there. I think I will look for a few reviews of it before adding it to my TBR list.
Incidentally, if you haven’t read Feet of Darkness and it’s follow up Cydonia by Seyi Sandra David, they are a corker of a read each.

This book does get less cruel as it goes on but I’ve realized now that it’s the first of a trilogy so I’m going to have to get the second one which will be out in March and then wait for the third because I do want to see where it goes and the protagonist is quite captivating. I’ll look for the ones you’ve mentioned although I am quite discouraged at the number of books I have sitting here waiting not too mention my wish list. Thanks for stopping by and engaging.

I am a huge fan of historical fiction, so I’ve already put this on my TBR. The first sentence reminded me of that story, “The Lottery”.

Well, this is a novel inspired by the Bible and there were definitely stonings in the Bible. I’m wondering if this is based on Deborah, who became a judge of Israel? Curious. I will say that while I like novelizations of characters in the Bible, I don’t love all of them. I’d have to try it and see. 🙂

This is based on the one and only prophetess from the Old Testament and I have to say, I’ve read other novelizations I’ve liked a whole lot more. The first sentence grabbed me but as the chapter went on, I really found the story repugnant. It did get better.

I hear you. I was quite taken aback by the violence and cruelty in this book but I guess that was the way it could be and maybe still is in some parts of our world. Thanks for stopping by. Liked your post.
